After a loss to the Oilers where we did not show up to play i expected a bounce back game. In some ways we seen that. We out shot them 45-21, dominated play for most of the game and goaltending was strong. So why where we on the wrong side of the score? Is it the hockey gods? Soon as we applied some good offensive pressure they would come back and score. We received penalties for the Flyers high sticking their teammates and we couldn't buy a goal at crucial moments. It would be easy to chalk it up to that and move on. I will not do that though. I seem to be beating a dead horse with this but our defensive break downs are killing us. Brodie was up to his old tricks on two goals. Just floating around watching the play. Kuluk joined the puck watching on a goal as well. It's getting to the point if Brodie and Hamonic are on the ice and in our zone I want to close my eyes until they score or we get it out. What is with Hamonic getting a match penalty? After watching the replay many times i still don't get it.
I do not want to focus just on the negative though as there was lots of positive things as well.We had an excellent start of the game. The first period, specially the first half we played with great jump and tenacity. Besides the mentioned breakdowns and the wind being taken out of our sails we played a good game. One that besides 1:11 min we probably would have come out with a convincing win.
Bennett seems to be gaining some confidence back. He got another assist last night and had 8 shots on net and looked dangerous. Jankowski looked like a premier forward in the offensive zone with a pile of chances. If that line starts scoring on opportunities like Monahans line we could be scoring 5 goals a game.
Our 4th line scored their first goal of the year. Only 15 games later than any other team in the league to get all 4 lines on the score sheet but a good sign. I still think we need a 4th line center but i do think Hathaway and Brouwer make good 4th line wingers.
Monahan and Backlunds lines played solid games i thought as well. Besides Monahons goal with a mixed up line they just where not able to find the score sheet.
