The final scored ended up 7-5 which sounds like a high flying exciting game. This was not the case. We played another dud like the Toronto game a few days earlier. The inconsistencies of our play is becoming a larger concern. This usually falls onto the head coach. So lets see what Gulutzan will try to do to change this. He sounds like a frustrated man in most of his interviews lately. Not as frustrated as the man on the other bench but our season hasn't been a complete derail.
The first period was penalty filled. After watching our extended power play i wished it was football where we could decline penalties. Which is extra frustrating since our PP has been good. Yes Versteeg had been good on the first PP unit but how the team was playing he would not have made a difference. There ended up being more short handed goals in the game than power play. To digress from the specialty teams. It could have been 5-1 after one if Maroons kick in would have touched his stick going in and if he didn't hit the post in what looked like a for sure goal.
The second period besides an early and late goal was pretty sloppy hockey being played on both sides. How many breakaways in a single game is the record i wondered. So it ended 5-1 after the second as we where the second best team that period for sure.
The third period started with Rittich in net. No fault to Mike Smith on his 5 goals allowed. The play in the third started off pretty much the same as the second. On the goal with the miscommunication between Rittich and Hamonic simply seemed like a continuation of our night. Then 5:00 into the third the game changed.
As much as i got a good chuckle about the meme of Kris Russell wearing a Flames jersey after he scored on his own net the previous game. I would like to thank our former prospect Laurent Brossoit on this night for letting us get back into the game. He was our first star. The comeback started with a goal by Bennett shooting from the corner. Should have never went in. With that goal we could also wave good bye to Brossoit's confidence. Ferland scored a pp goal which would fall into the could have saved category. Then two former Flames in Russell with him falling over and Brossoit letting in another could have stopped shot from Bennett. Now the Flames where taking over and everyone i think imagined this huge comeback. Johnny then scored another garbage goal from down low to make this a 1 goal game. Then my apparent whipping boy Brodie in the dying moments batted down a pass which Rittich had covered into our net crushing our comeback.
Brodies last minute gaff is not what lost us this game. We did not come to play this night. Our mental game seems to be the area of our game that needs to be addressed the most for this loss and a lot of nights where we lose.
