Eddie Lack on Waivers- The Plan?

November 24, 2017

Eddie Lack was placed on waivers this morning. I feel kinda bad for Lack. Watching him while he was in Vancouver i thought he would be a serviceable starting goalie. He did have a .921 save percentage & 2.31 gaa in 41 games. So when Carolina signed him i thought it was a good move. That didn't pan out how people thought having a .901 save percentage in 51 games during two years. When the Flames traded for him in a complicated deal i thought ok he should be a decent backup even if he stays just above that .900 save percentage and maybe he will regain his Vancouver form. On a side note which his really good for the flames is his cap hit if sent down is only $350,000 according to Flames Nation. Back on point, He didn't have a good pre season and then never got to play till Oct 13 when he came in for Mike Smith. Then in the last month he has started two games and came off the bench for one more. His numbers are terrible with a .813 sv% and a 5.24gaa. Mind you his last start i don't think he let in terrible goals just the flames played badly in front of him and he never made any big saves. I thought Gilles played good in relief and had similar numbers.

Now in my recent quarter team review i did say we needed to make a move in the backup position. I also said we could fix it internally with either Gilles or Rittich. Now recent Flames moves makes it easier to say Gillies will get the call cause he has always got the first call up. I think Rittich might be the better move. Now saying that i think both could fill the position. Rittich though does have better AHL numbers than Gillies over the last 2 seasons. Rittich also has played the 1b role to Gillies playing less games so he may be better suited for the back up role. The last time Gillies was not the man was his first year in the USHL in 2010-2011 where he was a 1b. Backing up Smith and how he is playing neither would be a 1b they would be a backup goalie. Playing back to backs and occasional starts barring injury or a tail off in the play of Smith. So i say call up Rittich. If Gillies is your goaltender of the future do you want him on the bench that much? Is it better to play the bulk of the games in the AHL? At the end of the day too Rittich's numbers are better. In other moves if Lack clears waivers i would also send him to the ECHL and then recall Parsons the AHL. See if Lack can find his game in the ECHL and give Parsons a promotion. He has had a bad start but looks like he is turning it around winning goaltender of the week.
